Centre drill bits are used in metalworking to provide a starting hole for a larger sized drill bit or to make a conical indentation in the end of a workpiece in which to mount a lathe centre.Complies with DIN332 standard.
1.Center drill bits can be used to make conical holes for a lathe center in order to make a starting point for a standard twist drill, designed to prevent the twist drill from walking, as well as for producing center holds in components or work pieces with require machining between centers.

1. DIN 333A (Type A)

* Grooves: Type A centre drills have two flutes/grooves, similar to a small twist drill, which aid in chip formation and evacuation. This makes them quite efficient at drilling.
* Function: The chamfer on the Type A allows it to produce centre holes with a 60-degree conical seating surface (essential for lathe work) *and* cut a small pilot diameter hole at the base of this cone. This pilot hole guides subsequent drills and prevents the larger drill tip from contacting the steepest part of the cone.
* Applications: The DIN 333A is considered the standard or universal centre drill. It is suitable for a wide range of materials and is commonly used for:

2. DIN 333B (Type B)
* Geometry: The Type B also features a chamfered transition similar to the Type A.
* Grooves: The crucial difference lies in its design – it has no flutes/grooves. It relies solely on its cutting lip geometry for material penetration.

* Applications: The absence of a pilot hole makes the Type B specifically useful for thin-walled workpieces, such as tubes or thin sheet metal. The Type B is preferred in these delicate situations where only a conical recess is needed for location or support without piercing through.
3. DIN 333R (Type R)
* Geometry: This type features a rounded (radiused) transition between the pilot diameter and the cutting head. It eliminates the sharp chamfered edge of the A and B types.

It can also produce a centre hole with a pilot diameter hole, useful for subsequent drilling operations where catching isn’t a concern.
* Applications: The DIN 333R is essential when using rotating centres on a lathe to prevent interference and potential damage. It offers increased safety and reliability in automated or high-speed turning applications. Its design reduces the likelihood of the centre drill catching during retraction in CNC operations. Sometimes specified simply to avoid a sharp edge that might cause stress concentration, though its prime purpose is compatibility with rotating centres.
