When should I use Titanium (TiN) coating?
Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating provides: (1) Increased surface hardness to HV 2300 (vs HV 800 uncoated), (2) Reduced friction coefficient by 40-60%, (3) Operating temperature increase up to 600°C, (4) 3-5× extended tool life in abrasive materials.

Best for: Aluminum alloys, copper, brass, stainless steel (with proper speed/feed), cast iron, hardened steel up to HRC 50.

NOT recommended for: Wrought iron (coating can chip), soft woods (unnecessary), very hard materials over HRC 55 (use cobalt instead).

Note: Gold/bronze color indicates proper TiN coating. Fading to silver means coating has worn through – bit should be replaced.

What’s the difference between bright, black oxide, and TiN finishes?
Bright (Uncoated): Raw HSS finish after grinding. No coating. Best heat dissipation for interrupted cuts. Lowest cost. Prone to rust – requires oil storage. Hardness: base material only.

Black Oxide (Steam Treatment): Thin oxide layer (1-2 microns) formed by steam at 540°C. Benefits: (1) Corrosion resistance, (2) Reduced glare for better hole visibility, (3) Minimal friction reduction (~10%), (4) Helps retain cutting fluid. Does NOT increase hardness. Most economical treated finish.

TiN (Titanium Nitride): Physical vapor deposition coating (2-4 microns). Benefits: (1) Surface hardness to HV 2300, (2) Significantly reduced friction, (3) Up to 5× longer life, (4) Higher heat resistance. Gold/bronze color is permanent (won’t fade unless worn). Premium option for production drilling.

High-speed steel tools are good for most general purpose applications, offering a combination of hardness and toughness for wear resistance.
Precision ground point, flutes, body, clearance and drill diameter for the ultimate in accuracy and performance.
Ground flutes provide fast chip removal to maximize accuracy and efficiency along the full working surface of the bit

Twist drill with Morse taper shank suitable for a variety of materials and industrial applications. The tang at the end of the shank is used for ejecting the drill from the socket or sleeve. The drive and alignment is derived from the taper lock. Fully Groud Round Shank Black Oxide Coated M2 HSS 6542 Drill Bits
