Reduced shank drill bits or blacksmith’s drill have shanks that are narrower than the drill diameter. This allows the drill bit to be fitted into smaller or portable chucks. Reduced shank drill bits are usually used in metalworks and are available in both metric and imperial standards.
Drill bits can have straight shanks narrower than the drill diameter so that they can be fitted in chucks not able to chuck the full diameter. 3-Flat Shanks: Many reduced shank bits feature three flat surfaces ground onto the shank. This provides extra grip and prevents the heavy bit from slipping or spinning inside the drill chuck while under a load.
Important Tips for Use
Go Slow: Because of the larger cutting diameter, these bits put more strain on the motor. Run your drill at a slower speed to prevent the bit from catching, which could cause damage or kickback.
Use Lubrication: When drilling through hard materials like steel, use cutting fluid or lubricant to keep the bit cool and extend its lifespan.
